Key Takeaways

  • ✦Two identical sunglasses β€” same frame, same lenses β€” sold for $25 in a plastic pouch vs $55 in a branded EVA case: packaging made a $30 retail price difference
  • ✦Microfiber pouches ($0.50–0.80) double as cleaning cloths but say 'budget' β€” fine for promotional giveaways, not for building a brand
  • ✦EVA hard cases ($1.50–2.00) are the workhorse chosen by 70% of brands β€” crush-resistant, zippered, with debossed or printed logo
  • ✦A thank-you card and branded sticker (under $0.10 combined) in every box drives social sharing and repeat purchases β€” one of the highest-ROI packaging investments
  • ✦Magnetic rigid boxes ($3–5) and leather cases ($3–5) signal luxury and slow the customer down β€” that moment of pause builds brand loyalty
  • ✦The best unboxing layers: outer mailer β†’ tissue or wrap β†’ case β†’ sunglasses β†’ cloth beneath β†’ surprise insert (sticker, discount card, adventure prompt)

Sunglasses Packaging That Actually Sells

A few years ago, two different clients ordered the exact same pair of sunglasses β€” a tortoiseshell acetate wayfarer, polarized lenses, UV400. Same frame. Same lenses. Same factory. One put them in a cheap black plastic pouch and sold them for $25. The other put them in a custom EVA hard case with a debossed logo, a microfiber cloth, and a thank-you card β€” and sold them for $55. Same product. The packaging made a $30 difference in retail price.

I have shipped to over 500 brands across 50 countries. If there is one thing I have learned, it is this: your packaging is doing more work than your sunglasses. The customer already bought the sunglasses. The packaging is what creates the moment β€” the thing they film, the thing they post, the reason they come back. Here is what I tell every brand about packaging.

The Packaging Menu: What Exists, What It Costs

Microfiber Pouch

$0.50–0.80

The entry level. Doubles as a cleaning cloth. You can screen-print or heat-transfer your logo. Fine for budget lines and promotional giveaways, but do not build a brand around a pouch. It says β€œwe spent as little as possible.”

EVA Hard Case β€” Most Popular

$1.50–2.00

This is the workhorse. Crush-resistant, zippered, fits in a bag. About 70% of our clients use some version of this. Zippered shell, soft interior lining, your logo debossed or printed on top. It protects the sunglasses during shipping and daily use. If you are doing one thing for packaging, do this.

PU Leather Case

$2.00–3.00

The premium step up. Feels expensive in the hand. You can deboss, foil stamp, or stitch your logo. Works best for brands selling above $40 retail. The weight and texture of a leather case communicates quality before the customer even opens it.

Custom Gift Box

$1.50–2.50

Retail-ready packaging. Usually a rigid cardboard box with magnetic closure, full-color printing, and a velvet or foam insert holding the sunglasses in place. This is what you see in department stores and boutique shops. Adds about 200 grams of shipping weight per unit, so factor that into your freight costs.

Wooden Display Box

$3.50–5.00

For the luxury tier β€” brands selling at $100+. Laser-engraved logo, velvet lining, sometimes a small drawer for accessories. Impressive as a gift but heavy to ship and expensive per unit. Only makes sense if your retail price justifies it.

All prices are EXW factory. MOQ for custom packaging is usually 500 units. Lead time is 2-3 weeks for most case types.

The "Unboxing Stack"

Smart brands do not just put sunglasses in a case and call it done. They layer the experience. Here is what I recommend for a mid-market brand ($30-60 retail):

Layer 1: Outer shipping box. Can be plain or branded. This is what protects everything in transit. If you are selling direct-to-consumer, a branded outer box with your logo makes the delivery feel intentional instead of generic.

Layer 2: The case. This is the star. An EVA hard case or leather case with your logo. This is what the customer keeps in their car or bag. Every time they pull it out, someone sees your brand.

Layer 3: Microfiber cloth in a branded sleeve. Practical and cheap. Costs about $0.30. Customers use it daily. Free advertising.

Layer 4: A card. Not just a warranty card β€” a few sentences about your brand. β€œWe started this brand because...” People who buy from independent brands want to feel connected to the maker. A short card does that.

Total for that stack: about $2.50-3.50 per unit. At 300 pairs, that is $750-1,050 invested in packaging. If it lets you charge $10 more per pair, you make that back on the first 75 sales and everything after is pure margin. And β€” this is the part nobody calculates β€” good packaging generates free marketing. Customers post unboxing videos. Friends ask β€œwhere did you get those?” The packaging pays for itself multiple times over.

Mistakes I See Brands Make

The case is too small. This happens constantly with oversized styles like cat eyes and sport wraps. If the customer has to force the sunglasses into the case, they will stop using it β€” and the sunglasses will get scratched in their bag. Always send your frame dimensions to the case supplier before ordering. Better yet, order samples of both the frame and the case together so you can test the fit.

Overcomplicating the logo. Your logo looks great on a website at 300 pixels. When it gets debossed into an EVA case at 30mm wide, the fine lines blur and the tiny text becomes unreadable. Simplify for packaging. Bold shapes, clean typography. I have had to tell dozens of clients to redo their packaging artwork because the logo they loved on screen looked like a smudge on the case.

Not thinking about shipping durability. Beautiful packaging that arrives crushed might as well not exist. EVA cases survive shipping well β€” they are designed to take impact. Cardboard gift boxes need outer shipping cartons with adequate padding. We always pack retail boxes inside master cartons with foam between each unit. It adds about $0.20 to shipping cost per unit and prevents thousands of dollars in damage claims.

We stock 50+ case styles in our factory. If you want to compare options, I can send you a packaging sample kit β€” 5-10 different case styles with your logo applied. You can touch them, open them, see how the logo looks, and decide which one fits your brand.
