I get it. Most explanations online are written by people who've never set foot in a factory. They copy each other's definitions, throw in some vague advice, and call it a day. What OEM Actually Means (Not What Google Tells You)

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. Sounds fancy. Here's what it means in plain English:you design it, we build it.

You come to us with your frame design -- maybe a CAD file, maybe a 3D model, sometimes literally a sketch on a napkin (yes, that's happened more than once). You specify the materials, the lens type, the hinges, the color, the finish, everything. Our job is to turn your vision into a physical product.

You own the design. Period. We can't sell it to anyone else. We can't even show it to other clients. It's yours.

What You Bring to an OEM Order:

  • Frame design (CAD drawings, 3D models, or detailed sketches)
  • Material specs -- which acetate, which metal alloy, which hinge type
  • Lens requirements -- material, color, coatings, polarization
  • Color palette and surface finishes
  • Logo placement and branding details
  • Packaging design

A real example: last year, a brand from Copenhagen sent us a design inspired by 1970s ski goggles. Oversized wrap-around frame, gradient mirror lenses, matte acetate. What ODM Actually Means

ODM stands for Original Design Manufacturer. Translation: we design it, you brand it.

We already have hundreds of frame designs -- tested, tooled, and ready to produce. You browse our catalog, pick the styles you like, and we customize them with your logo, your colors, and your packaging. The core design stays the same, but the branding is all you.

Think of it like buying a house versus building one from scratch. The house already exists. You choose the paint colors, the furniture, and the nameplate on the door. You didn't design the floor plan, but it's still your home.

What the Factory Provides in ODM:

  • Ready-made frame designs (we have 400+ active styles)
  • Existing molds -- no tooling fees
  • Proven material and lens combinations
  • Customization: your logo, your colors, your packaging
  • Some factories allow minor design tweaks (temple shape, nose pad style)

Here's something most articles won't tell you: there's nothing wrong with ODM. Some of our most successful clients -- brands doing $2M+ in annual revenue -- started with pure ODM and still use it for 60-70% of their line. The frames are good. They're market-proven. They sell.

The catch? Another brand could theoretically pick the same frame. In practice, with different colors, lenses, and branding, two ODM products from the same base design can look completely different. But if design exclusivity is your thing, you need OEM.

  • Samples: $50-$200 per pair. Budget for 2-3 rounds. That first sample is never perfect -- anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.
  • Unit cost at 500 pieces: $6-$12 per pair, depending on materials and lenses.
  • Bottom line for your first style: $4,000-$10,000 all-in for 500 pairs. That works out to $8-$20 per pair landed.

ODM: The Lean Start

Same scenario -- one style, polarized lenses, your logo:

  • Mold/tooling: $0. Molds exist. That's the whole point.
  • Logo setup: $0-$50 for laser engraving or pad printing setup.
  • Samples: $20-$60 per pair. Usually one round is enough since you're working from a proven design.
  • Unit cost at 200 pieces: $3.50-$7 per pair.
  • Bottom line for your first style: $800-$1,800 all-in for 200 pairs. That's $4-$9 per pair landed.

💡 The Hidden Costs Nobody Mentions

Shipping, customs duties (2-5% for sunglasses into the US and EU), third-party quality inspection if you want one ($200-$400 per inspection), and packaging -- these add 15-25% to your per-unit cost. I've seen too many first-time buyers forget about duties and end up with a nasty surprise at the port. Factor it in from day one.

Timeline: How Long Things Really Take

"How soon can I get my sunglasses?" -- the question I hear more than my own name. Here's the honest answer, not the optimistic one your sales rep gives you. OEM: 45-90 Days (Realistic)

  1. Design finalization (5-10 days): Back-and-forth on specs. This is where being prepared saves you weeks. Come with clear drawings.
  2. Mold making (15-25 days): This is the part you can't rush. Cutting corners on molds means cutting corners on every pair that comes out of them.
  3. First samples (7-14 days): We make 3-5 sample pairs and ship them to you.
  4. Revisions (5-14 days): "The temple is 2mm too wide." "Can we try a slightly warmer brown?" Normal. Budget for at least one revision round.
  5. Mass production (20-45 days): Depends on quantity. 500 pairs? Three weeks. 5,000 pairs? Six weeks.
  6. QC and shipping (5-10 days): Inspection, packing, and getting on a boat or plane.

One client told me he planned to launch his brand in 30 days with custom OEM frames. I told him I could do it in 30 days the same way I could lose 30 pounds in a week -- technically possible, but nobody's going to be happy with the result. Give it 60 days minimum. 90 if you want to sleep at night.

ODM: 20-45 Days (Realistic)

  1. Pick your styles and send us your brief (2-5 days): Logo files, color preferences, lens choices. The clearer you are, the faster we move.
  2. Branded samples (5-10 days): Your logo on the frames, your packaging mockup.
  3. Approval (3-5 days): You check the samples, give us the green light.
  4. Production (15-25 days): Existing molds, existing process. Smooth.
  5. QC and shipping (5-10 days): Same as OEM.

I've done ODM orders in 18 days when a client needed product for a trade show. Not ideal, but doable for small quantities of a style we already had in stock.

The Good, the Bad, and the Expensive

I'm going to be blunt here because I'd rather you make the right decision than the decision that makes me the most money.

OEM -- The Good Stuff ✅

  • The frames are yours and only yours. No one else can sell the same design. That matters when you're building a premium brand.
  • Total quality control. You pick every material, every component. Want Japanese spring hinges? German Zeiss-quality lenses? Italian Mazzucchelli acetate? Done.
  • You can patent your designs. Real IP protection. I've had clients successfully enforce design patents against copycats.
  • Premium pricing power. Unique designs command higher retail prices. One of our OEM clients sells at $189 retail -- same production quality as frames selling for $45 in ODM.
  • Margins improve at scale. At 5,000+ units, OEM unit costs can actually drop below ODM because you've amortized the mold cost.

OEM -- The Painful Parts ❌

  • Your wallet feels it. Molds, samples, revisions -- it adds up before you sell a single pair.
  • Slow. Two to three months minimum. If you need product for summer, start in February.
  • Design risk is real. I've seen beautiful custom designs that customers just... didn't buy. The market is brutal and honest.
  • Higher MOQs. You need to commit to 300-1,000 pieces to justify the mold investment. That's a lot of sunglasses to sell if you're brand new.
  • You need design skills. Either you hire a product designer or you work closely with the factory's design team (which costs extra).

ODM -- The Good Stuff ✅

  • Low barrier to entry. You can start a sunglasses brand for under $2,000. Seriously.
  • Speed. Product in your hands in 3-6 weeks. Perfect for testing the market, seasonal drops, or reacting to trends.
  • Lower risk. These designs already sell. We know they fit well, look good, and hold up. You're not gambling on an untested concept.
  • Small MOQs. Test five different styles with 100 pieces each instead of betting everything on one custom design.
  • No design experience needed. Point, click, customize, order. If you can use Instagram, you can order ODM sunglasses.

ODM -- The Trade-offs ❌

  • You won't be the only one. Another brand somewhere might sell frames from the same base mold. Different colors and branding, sure, but the shape is the same.
  • Limited customization. You can change colors, logos, lenses, and packaging. You can't change the frame shape, the hinge type, or the nose bridge design.
  • No IP protection. You can't patent a frame you didn't design.
  • Harder to build a "luxury" perception. Not impossible -- plenty of successful mid-range brands use ODM -- but if you're targeting the $150+ retail market, customers expect unique designs.

Which One Is Right for You?

Honestly? Most people overthink this part. Here's my decision tree -- the same one I walk clients through on the phone:

Go OEM If:

  • You have a specific design that doesn't exist in anyone's catalog
  • You can invest $5,000+ per style without sweating
  • You're okay waiting 2-3 months for product
  • You're building a brand where "nobody else has these" is part of the pitch
  • You have design capabilities -- either in-house or a hired product designer
  • You're confident you can sell 500+ units per style
  • You're an existing brand adding eyewear to your product line (fashion label, sports brand, etc.)

Go ODM If:

  • This is your first rodeo -- you've never sold sunglasses before
  • Your total budget is under $5,000
  • You need product in 6 weeks or less
  • You want to test 3-5 styles to see what your audience actually buys
  • You don't know CAD from CAT
  • You're competing on brand story, marketing, and customer experience -- not frame design
  • You're a retailer adding private-label sunglasses

The Smart Play: Start ODM, Graduate to OEM

This is what I actually recommend to 80% of first-time brand owners. It's the lowest-risk path to a fully differentiated product line, and I've watched it work over and over.

The Three-Phase Play:

  1. Phase 1 -- Launch with ODM (Months 1-6): Pick 3-5 proven styles from our catalog. Add your branding. Get to market fast. Your job in this phase isn't to have the most unique frames -- it's to learn what your customers actually want. Track everything: which styles sell, which colors move, what customers complain about.

You keep your best-selling ODM styles running while gradually replacing them with OEM exclusives. Within 2-3 years, you have a fully custom line that was built on data, not hope.

Picking the Right Factory

Whether you go OEM or ODM, your manufacturer is your most important partner. I'm biased here -- obviously -- but these are the criteria I'd use even if I wasn't running a factory:

1. Do They Actually Specialize in Sunglasses?

This might seem obvious, but I've lost count of how many clients came to us after getting burned by a "general accessories" factory that also makes phone cases, handbags, and sunglasses. Sunglasses require specific expertise -- lens optics, UV testing, frame ergonomics, hinge engineering. A factory that makes everything makes nothing well.

2. Certifications -- Non-Negotiable

CE (Europe), FDA compliance (US), UV400, ANSI Z80.3, ISO 9001. If a factory can't show you these certificates within 24 hours of asking, walk away. These aren't nice-to-haves -- they're legal requirements. The EU's CE marking system exists specifically to protect consumers, and customs officers take it seriously. 3. How Fast Do They Reply?

Here's my rule: if a factory takes more than 48 hours to respond to your first inquiry, they'll take a week to respond when you have a production issue. Communication speed during the sales phase is a preview of what you'll get during production. Test it.

4. Order Samples. Always.

Never -- and I mean never -- place a production order without seeing and holding a sample first. Check the hinge tension (it should be smooth but firm), the lens clarity (hold it up to text -- any distortion is a red flag), and the overall finish. Compare samples from 2-3 factories. The $100 you spend on samples could save you $10,000 in bad product.

5. Flexibility on MOQ

The best factories invest in relationships, not just orders. We start ODM at 50 pieces for first-time clients. Why? Because if we help you succeed at 50 pieces, you'll come back for 5,000. A factory that won't budge on 1,000-piece MOQs for a startup doesn't want your business -- they want your money. There's a difference.
