A proper factory salt-spray tests plated frames for 24–48 hours and cycle-tests hinges. A frame that skips any of those steps will save the factory a few cents and cost you your reorder rate.

Monel vs Stainless vs Titanium: What You Are Paying For

Ask ten suppliers what their aviator frames are made of and you will get variations on three answers: Monel, stainless steel and titanium. Here is what those words actually mean on a factory floor and in your unit cost.

Monel. A nickel-copper alloy, and the traditional aviator material. Its two properties matter to eyewear: it resists corrosion from sweat and salt air, and it is malleable enough that a frame can be adjusted to fit a face without breaking or losing its temper. Monel takes a bright nickel or gold plate exceptionally well. The cost sits roughly 30–50% above stainless, which is why it is the default for mid-market and premium retail aviators but disappears from rock-bottom quotes.

Stainless steel. The value workhorse. Cheaper, harder and perfectly adequate when the plating is done well — many of our stainless frames are PVD-coated rather than plated, which makes the finish dramatically more durable against peeling. The trade-offs: stainless is stiffer, so in-store adjustments are harder, and it is slightly heavier than Monel. And again: if the price says stainless, the metal is stainless.

The honest framing advice I give buyers is to pick the material that matches the retail price point you are aiming at, not the most impressive-sounding alloy. A well-finished stainless aviator at $2.50 FOB will outlive a badly finished Monel frame at $3.80 — the material matters less than the finishing, and the finishing is what you cannot see in a photo.

On a frame this wide, a cheap lens shows distortion at the edges within minutes of wear — inspect the lens, not just the frame, on your first sample.

The four QC checks to put in writing. One: solder and weld points are ground, polished and invisible to a fingernail.
